VISUAL AND CRITICAL STUDIES

The Visual and Critical Studies program is not only concerned with the study of visual media across many different disciplines, but also the development of hybrid research practices, particularly the overlap between studio and scholarly production. The program is part of an evolving paradigm that addresses the complexity of visual and critical practices in the 21st century—it is designed for students who are committed to working, writing, and creating in an environment of interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and postdisciplinary practices.

MAVCS alum Alicia Chester (2009) has been awarded a Mellon Digital Humanities Fellowship for 2016–2018 at the University of Rochester, where she is a PhD student in visual and cultural studies. The Andrew W. Mellon Digital Humanities Fellowship trains humanities students to integrate digital technologies into innovative research programs.

Chance and Intentionality

A focused reaction against the volition of the subject became a veritable movement in mid-late 20th century avant garde art, music, and writing. While some of this activity can be read as an extension of the historical avant garde’s investigation of altered states of consciousness or lucid madness, as in Dada and especially Surrealism, the work of John Cage and Morton Feldman in music, Jackson Pollock and Gerhard Richter in painting, or Jackson Mac Low and Hannah Weiner in writing constitute so many alternative approaches to a post-determinist practice.
This course studies the philosophical literature on intentionality and its dialectical other, “chance,” from Plato and Aristotle to Elizabeth Grosz and Brian Massumi. Then it offers a survey of important “indeterminist” practices, improvisation, participation and other proto- “social practice” techniques, including French Symbolism, Free Jazz, New York School, Conceptual Photography, and Fluxus. We will place a special emphasis on the way indeterminacy claims to ameliorate conflicts between political commitment and aesthetic quality.
